Sifu Janos Konya
Sifu Janos Konya is the head instructor at JK Wing Chun Academy.
He holds a 3th level master degree & has trained in Martial Arts styles for over 40 years in Europe & Australia. Janos' interest in martial arts was sparked as a child growing up in Hungary, and he became proficient in a few styles including Greek Wrestling, Shotokan Karate, Kickboxing,Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi Chuan and Qi gong.
Janos began Wing Chun here in Australia, under the tutelage of Sifu Jim Fung, whose master was Grandmaster Chu Song Tin and also undertook training with Master Susana Ho. After achieving the level of instructor Janos began his own school in 2006, and did further Instructor level training in 2010.In the term 'Martial Arts' there is not only the word 'Martial' which means to fight, but also the word 'Arts'. This teaches us that it's not only about fighting, but that there's another side to it as well ie a focus on the mastery of each technique (which is art), as well as humility and the will to help others.
One of the most important sayings is: "a true fighter will not provoke violence but seeks to avoid it." Some martial arts emphasise size and strength, and others teach techniques where power such as Qi is drawn from the inside, as in Tai Chi. Wing Chun can be said to discourage brute force and use "mind power" instead, so that great stature or huge muscular strength isn't needed.
Throughout his life Janos has included all elements of total fitness - muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility. Over the years he has used traditional body building techniques in his own commercial gym to build muscle mass, but saw the need to keep this in balance to ensure speed and flexibility.
He also believes that mental discipline and spiritual preparation are essential to the success of the physical training required for developing good martial arts skills.Janos believes that by training your body physically you are also learning about self discipline and ultimately self knowledge. Janos works with his students to develop this commitment to training which has far reaching effects in other areas of their lives - in self confidence and mental discipline. In Janos' opinion after 35 years of training in different styles, Wing Chun is the one of most effective form of self defence not only for men, but also for women and children .
